It's why Project: Sonic 2017 Debute teaser specifically said "From the team that brought you Sonic Colours, Sonic Generations". Because Sonic Lost World barely passed as a Sonic game.

Probably because purchasing things for your custom avatar will be a requirement for the game, thus why the stages we've seen seems to be very generous when it comes to rings.
